Frequently Asked Questions

What is DentalGuard?

DentalGuard is a 24/7 emergency dental teleconsultation platform that connects patients experiencing dental emergencies with licensed dentists via secure video consultations. We provide immediate professional assessment, prescriptions when appropriate, and guidance for follow-up care.

How quickly can I speak to a dentist?

Most patients connect with a licensed dentist within minutes of requesting a consultation. Our platform is designed for emergency situations requiring immediate professional attention.

What types of dental emergencies do you handle?

We handle severe dental pain, infections, abscesses, trauma, broken teeth, lost fillings or crowns, and other urgent dental concerns. Our service is for emergency situations only, not routine dental care or cleanings.

Are your dentists licensed?

Yes. All DentalGuard dentists are licensed in Minnesota and registered with The Dental Emergency Room. They maintain active DEA registrations, current malpractice insurance, and comply with all state dental practice regulations.

How much does a consultation cost?

We charge a transparent flat fee per emergency consultation. The fee is clearly displayed before payment and covers the video consultation, clinical assessment, documentation, and electronic prescriptions when medically appropriate. We do not accept insurance.

Do you accept insurance?

No. DentalGuard operates on a cash-pay model. We do not process insurance claims or accept insurance reimbursement. All fees are paid directly by patients at the time of service.

Can I get a prescription through DentalGuard?

Yes. When clinically appropriate, our licensed dentists can prescribe non-narcotic medications such as antibiotics, analgesics, and anti-inflammatories. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy.

How does the prescription process work?

During your consultation, the dentist will assess your condition and determine if medication is appropriate. If prescribed, you'll select your preferred pharmacy from our nationwide network, and the prescription will be transmitted electronically through secure, HIPAA-compliant channels. You can pick up your medication at the pharmacy you selected.

Can I choose which pharmacy receives my prescription?

Yes. You have complete choice in selecting your preferred pharmacy from our nationwide network of participating pharmacies, including major chains and independent pharmacies.

Does the dentist choose which medication to prescribe?

Yes. Our licensed dentists maintain full professional discretion in medication selection based on their clinical assessment of your condition, medical history, and professional judgment.

Can you prescribe controlled substances or narcotics?

No. DentalGuard does not prescribe controlled substances or narcotic medications through our teleconsultation platform. We prescribe only non-narcotic medications appropriate for emergency dental conditions.

Is my information secure?

Yes. DentalGuard is fully HIPAA-compliant. We use end-to-end encryption for all video consultations, secure storage for medical records, and encrypted transmission for prescriptions. Your privacy and data security are our top priorities.

What do I need for a consultation?

You need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and the ability to provide clear images of your dental issue if requested by the dentist.

Will I receive documentation of my consultation?

Yes. Every consultation generates comprehensive clinical documentation including assessment notes, diagnosis, treatment recommendations, and any prescriptions issued. You can access these records through your secure patient portal.

Does DentalGuard replace my regular dentist?

No. DentalGuard provides emergency-only teleconsultation services. We do not replace comprehensive in-person dental examinations or routine dental care. Our service is designed to provide immediate assessment and temporary relief, with guidance for follow-up in-person treatment.

What if I need in-person treatment?

If the dentist determines you need in-person care, they will provide recommendations for follow-up treatment and may refer you to The Dental Emergency Room in Edina, Minnesota, or advise you to seek care from a local dentist.

Is DentalGuard available 24/7?

Yes. Our platform operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays, to ensure you can access emergency dental care whenever you need it.

What if I have technical issues during my consultation?

We provide technical support during consultations. If technical issues prevent completion of your consultation, we offer alternative scheduling options and refund policies for technical failures.

Who operates DentalGuard?

DentalGuard is operated by The Dental Emergency Room, a Minnesota dental practice established in 2008 and located in Edina, Minnesota. Our physical practice serves as the host clinic for all teleconsultation services.

How do I get started?

Download the DentalGuard app or visit our website, create an account, describe your dental emergency, and you'll be connected with a licensed dentist within minutes.

What if I'm not satisfied with my consultation?

We strive for excellent patient care. If you have concerns about your consultation, please contact us at info@dental-er.us or call (612) 800-8008. Refunds may be provided at our discretion if services cannot be rendered due to technical issues or if the dentist determines your condition cannot be appropriately addressed via teleconsultation.
