E-Prescribing Workflow Documentation

DentalGuard's e-prescribing workflow ensures both prescriber choice and patient choice throughout the medication and pharmacy selection process.

Complete Patient Consultation & Prescription Workflow

Step 1: Patient Registration & Medical History

Patient creates account and provides comprehensive medical history including:

  • Current medications and dosages
  • Known drug allergies and adverse reactions
  • Medical conditions and past dental procedures
  • Pharmacy preferences and location

Step 2: Emergency Consultation Request

Patient describes dental emergency (chief complaint) and uploads relevant images. Payment is processed before consultation begins.

Step 3: Video Consultation with Licensed Dentist

Minnesota-licensed dentist conducts secure video consultation, reviews patient history, examines images, and performs clinical assessment.

Step 4: Clinical Assessment & Diagnosis

Dentist evaluates the emergency condition and determines appropriate treatment plan, including whether medication is clinically indicated.

Step 5: PRESCRIBER CHOICE - Medication Selection

PRESCRIBER HAS FULL CHOICE OF MEDICATION

The licensed dentist maintains complete professional discretion in selecting:

  • Medication Type: Antibiotics, analgesics, anti-inflammatories, or other non-narcotic medications
  • Specific Drug: Choice of specific medication based on clinical judgment (e.g., Amoxicillin vs. Clindamycin)
  • Dosage & Strength: Appropriate dosage based on patient factors
  • Quantity & Duration: Number of doses and treatment duration
  • Instructions: Specific patient instructions for medication use
  • Refills: Whether refills are appropriate

Clinical Factors Considered:

  • Patient's medical history and current medications
  • Known allergies and contraindications
  • Severity and type of dental emergency
  • Professional clinical judgment and best practices

No External Influence: Medication selection is based solely on the dentist's professional clinical assessment. There are no formulary restrictions, financial incentives, or external pressures influencing prescriber choice.

Step 6: PATIENT CHOICE - Pharmacy Selection

PATIENT HAS FULL CHOICE OF PHARMACY

The patient selects their preferred pharmacy from our nationwide network:

  • Search Options: Search by ZIP code, city, or pharmacy name
  • Pharmacy Network: Access to major chains (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, etc.) and independent pharmacies nationwide
  • Location Information: View pharmacy addresses, phone numbers, and hours
  • Convenience: Select pharmacy closest to home, work, or preferred location
  • Change Anytime: Patient can update pharmacy preference for future prescriptions

No Restrictions: Patients are not limited to specific pharmacies or networks. Any participating pharmacy in the nationwide e-prescribing network can be selected.

Step 7: Electronic Prescription Transmission

Once the dentist finalizes the prescription and patient selects pharmacy:

  • Prescription is transmitted electronically through secure, HIPAA-compliant channels
  • Encrypted transmission to patient's selected pharmacy via certified e-prescribing network
  • Real-time delivery ensures pharmacy receives prescription immediately
  • Patient receives confirmation with prescription details and pharmacy information

Step 8: Pharmacy Fulfillment

Patient's selected pharmacy receives the prescription and prepares medication for pickup. Patient is notified when prescription is ready.

Step 9: Clinical Documentation

Complete medical record is generated including consultation notes, diagnosis, treatment plan, and prescription details. Patient can access all documentation through secure patient portal.

Key Workflow Principles

1. Prescriber Autonomy

Licensed dentists maintain complete professional independence in all clinical decisions. Medication selection is based solely on clinical assessment, patient safety, and professional judgment. There are no formulary restrictions, preferred drug lists, or financial incentives that influence prescriber choice.

2. Patient Autonomy

Patients have unrestricted choice in pharmacy selection. They can choose any participating pharmacy based on convenience, preference, or existing pharmacy relationships. There are no network restrictions or incentives to use specific pharmacies.

3. Security & Compliance

All prescription transmissions use HIPAA-compliant, encrypted channels through certified e-prescribing networks. Patient data and prescription information are protected throughout the entire workflow.

4. Transparency

Patients receive complete information about prescribed medications, including drug name, dosage, instructions, and potential side effects. Pharmacy selection options are clearly presented with full location details.

5. Quality Assurance

All prescriptions are reviewed for drug interactions, allergies, and contraindications before transmission. Clinical documentation meets professional standards and regulatory requirements.
